County water customers still need to boil

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Baldwin County Water & Sewer Department continues to improve the water pressure and increase the amount of water in storage tanks.

The Boil Water Notice remains in effect, as for Friday afternoon, for county water customers heading into the weekend.

The City of Milledgeville water customers aren’t under the boil advisory.

County Manager Ralph McMullen said Thursday county water storage tanks have “never gotten to this critical point.”

Customers may experience air in the lines when faucets are turned on, and the water may appear milky.

“As far as the air in the lines, they can help us by opening it a little bit to let that air bleed off,” McMullen said. “We are still asking people to conserve as much as possible. We are improving, but our tanks aren’t there yet.”

During extreme winter weather conditions, excessive usage and water pipe breaks caused water service interruption within several areas of Baldwin County and the City of Milledgeville.

Cold weather, busted pipes and running faucets nearly emptied three 500,000 county ground storage tanks.

McMullen said one county tank sits at zero.

Water and sewer staffs are fully engaged working to fix the problems.

County water levels sent out a “Boil Water Notice” to their customers Thursday morning because a potential health hazard due to existence of low-pressure areas.

All citizens that experienced water outages or low water pressures were advised to “boil” all water for at least one minute prior to use for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food.

Citizens should continue to boil their water until they are notified otherwise.

Staff urges residents to report pipe breaks and conserve.
