MILLEDGEVILLE — The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for all of north and central Georgia, including Baldwin County and surrounding areas.
The flood watch will remain in effect through Sunday afternoon.
According to the Weather Service, an area of low pressure is expected to develop along the Gulf Coast Saturday and progress northeast through the state into Sunday. Due to recent rains, area creeks and streams are elevated and an additional few inches of rain will result in additional flooding.
The rains caused runoff into streams and the Oconee in Baldwin, Washington and Wilkinson counties, resulting in rising river levels.
Flood stage is 27 feet.
A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on the forecasts.
Due to the rains, the Oconee River Greenway is closed until further notice.
Saturday’s forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of rain and highs in the low 50s. Sunday’s forecast is a 90 percent chance of rain and highs in the low 60s.
