BOE discusses future legal representation

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin County Board of Education agreed Wednesday during a called school board meeting to continue working with its current legal counsel.

During Monday’s work session, Sherry Culves of Jones, Cork & Miller, the school system’s attorney, announced she will be leaving the Macon law firm to join another practice in the Atlanta area at the end of the calendar year.

The BOE is currently working with the firm regarding a pending special education litigation.

“It doesn’t make sense to change lawyers at this point because the [pending] case has been going on for so long. The case is now well under way and [Culves] ought to take that with her and continue to handle it,” Warren Plowden, partner with Jones, Cork & Miller, suggested to the school board at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

The school system will continue using services of Jones, Cork & Miller for all other future legal matters, including the upcoming superintendent search.

“We’re pleased to continue that representation and provide you that service at what we believe are very good rates. We have a great education law department; we’ve done it all,” Plowden said. “We have a wealth of experience and we’re proud to continue that representation. We have experience and personnel to continue that work on a proper basis at a proper rate.”

Founded in 1872, Jones, Cork & Miller is among the oldest law firms in Georgia. The Macon firm began representing the school district in 1993.
