Troopers from Post 33 of the Georgia State Patrol arrested five people for driving under the influence during the recent Independence Day holiday period.

According to Communications Equipment Operator Troy Flury, the five arrests were made within the post’s coverage area that includes Baldwin, Washington, Jones and Hancock counties.

“In most cases they would be booked and bonded out,” Flury said.

The holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. Friday, July 3, and ended at midnight Sunday. The GSP had predicted 1,874 crashes during the period. Of those crashes, predictions were that 895 people would be injured and 22 would die. There were no traffic fatalities in Post 33’s four-county region.

In Baldwin County troopers issued 39 citations and 59 warnings, Flury said. Troopers also worked two accidents during the holiday period that occurred in Baldwin and Washington counties.

Statewide, 19 traffic deaths were recorded, just shy of the prediction of 22. The number of accidents was much higher than predicted with 2,490 wrecks recorded. There were 682 injuries attributed to the traffic accidents, lower than the 895 predicted.

On Lake Sinclair, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported two minor boating accidents. The first accident resulted from a boat hitting a stationary object in the water Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, a swimmer was thrown from the back of a personal watercraft.

“He was found floating face-down in the water,” DNR Ranger First Class Chad Welch said. “He is recovering from a pulled muscle in his back.”

DNR Rangers made five boating under the influence (BUI) arrests and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office made one BUI arrest. Welch said the DNR issued numerous citations and warnings.

“It was a fairly quiet weekend,” Welch said.
