The Milledgeville Police Department is investigating a Friday afternoon wreck that left a truck on its side on Roberson Mill Road and sent both occupants to the hospital.

According to witnesses at the scene, a 2000 Hyundai Tiburon, driven by David Young of Milledgeville, was traveling eastbound on Roberson Mill Road in the direction of North Columbia Street when a black Ford F150 truck attempted to cross Roberson Mill from Garrett Way and was struck by Young’s vehicle.

Young attempted to avoid the accident by applying his brakes but struck the vehicle, causing his Tiburon to come to a stop, and the force of the impact to flip the F150 onto its side.

“I was coming eastbound and all I could do was try to stop,” Young said.

The two occupants of the Ford F150, an elderly male and female whose identities remained unknown at press time, had to be extracted from the vehicle by the Milledgeville Fire Department.

Brandon Barth is a full-time firefighter with the Baldwin County Fire Department and was supposed to be off duty Friday afternoon — but when he saw the wreck happen from his vehicle as he waited at the traffic light at the Highway 22/441 Bypass intersection, he knew he had to act, and act quickly.

“I was just sitting at the light at the bypass when the whole thing went off. I was going to go get lunch, and I heard the noise and saw the dust cloud go up. I got there as quickly as I could and went out to assess the patients,” Barth said.

The male and female occupant of the Ford F150 truck were eventually extracted from their vehicle with the help of the MFD.

Both were transported via ambulance to Oconee Regional Medical Center as a precaution, though from appearances at the scene their injuries appeared to be minor.

Young, who was driving to work at the time of the wreck, did not go to the emergency room and stated he did not appear to suffer from any injuries with the exception of a slightly stiff neck.

Roberson Mill Road was eventually re-opened to all lanes of traffic by 1:30 p.m.

The incident is being investigated by the Milledgeville Police Department.

There was no word at press time if either party involved would face charges related to the wreck.

The Georgia Department of Transportation confirmed earlier this year to The Union-Recorder that a traffic light will be placed at the Garrett Way/Roberson Mill Road intersection, though DOT Engineer Kraig Collins said he was unsure as to the time frame involved with the installation of the light.

The intersection has already undergone numerous changes in the past few months, including the installation of upgraded water and sewer lines, resurfacing of the roadways, greater visibility of deceleration lanes and the addition of sidewalks on the Garrett Way side.
