Georgia Military College cadets and students took a break from their usual routines Thursday to help soldiers serving in the United States and overseas.

GMC held its spring quarter blood drive Thursday to benefit the U.S. military and the nation’s armed forces.

The blood drive is a quarterly event at GMC and has always seen a positive participation from GMC students, faculty and the public, said Brenda Brown, GMC community service coordinator.

“The participation level has been pretty good so far,” Brown said. “This will go on until 5 p.m., and we are hoping to beat the record that was set at our spring quarter blood drive. That was 110 pints.”

The quarter prior to that, 108 pints were collected, according to Brown.

Elizabeth Erersole is in her second year with GMC’s College program and was one of many GMC students to participate in Thursday’s blood drive.

Though it had been a few years since her last blood donation, Erersole was found waiting in line for her turn to give blood.

“The last time I gave blood was about four years ago when I was in high school. I think this is great and definitely a good thing to give back to the military,” Erersole said. “I think it’s good that they come out here because sometimes you don’t always know where you are able to give blood in the community.”

Those were sentiments shared by Erersole’s fellow student, GMC sophomore Erik Torres as he lay on a gurney waiting to complete his donation.

“The last time I gave blood was about a year ago. I came here today because I wanted to do something good for the community,” Torres said.
