A Milledgeville man sent deputies and troopers on a meandering chase on Wilkinson County dirt roads Thursday night after he reportedly robbed an Irwinton Road convenience store, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office reported.
Jamie W. Burgoon, 27, of Magnolia Avenue, was arrested and charged with robbery by intimidation, Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Detective Deidre Byrd said.
Burgoon, dressed in a gray hooded sweatshirt, reportedly passed a note to a cashier at the Friendly Gus Store on Irwinton Road about 8 p.m. Thursday, a sheriff's report states.
“The note told her to give him all the money; he took it and then left in a white Dodge Caravan,” Byrd said.
The cashier wasn't sure if he had a gun. Police later learned that he was not carrying a weapon.
Burgoon reportedly left driving toward Wilkinson County and a witness jotted down his license plate number.
“Without that person, we may not have been able to catch him,” Byrd said.
Deputies from Baldwin and Wilkinson counties, in addition to McIntyre Police and the Georgia State patrol chased Burgoon across dirt roads for several miles before they were able to stop him.
“It was a great collaborative effort,” Byrd said. “To have something happen and have it wrapped up in about and hour or two with no injures — what more could you ask for? It was good work by everyone involved.”
Burgoon also faces charges outside of Baldwin County.
“Burgoon was charged with aggravated assault in Wilkinson County and also could face charges from the Georgia State Patrol,” Byrd said.
Burgoon is being held in the Wilkinson County Jail, Byrd said.
