The Georgia College & State University Department of Continuing Education will host “Building the Bridge to a Brighter Future,” for its second and final night this evening at 7 p.m. in Russell Auditorium.

The Baldwin County Black history program is open to the public.

“It’s a celebration of black history through the use of skits, dances and gospel music,” Danielle Fields, program coordinator with GCSU’s Continuing Education department, said. “There will also be stomp, where the performers beat drums and stomp with their feet. It’s a very diverse performance and they have a really great program.”

The event is being performed by “Cultural Connections,” an organization currently run by Future’s director, Cheryl Coulson.

Cultural Connections is an organization that is dedicated to educating people in the Milledgeville and Baldwin County community through singing, acting and stepping, according to Coulson.

“We have had this program at both Baldwin High School and Oak Hill Middle School in the past, but have not had everyone together until now,” Coulson said. “The point of this performance is to build a bridge to a brighter future in our community and show everyone that culture is not something that occurs just once each week or every few months. Culture occurs on a 24/7 basis. We’re trying to introduce people to new things and new ideas.”

This evening’s performance is expected to last around 2 hours and will include both dancing and musical performances based around the ideas of togetherness and cultural awareness, Coulson said.

“What I hope is that people will enjoy the program and come away from it seeing that there is not a black race or a white race, but one race — the human race,” Coulson said.

Adult tickets for “Building the Bridge” are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Children tickets are $6 in advance and $10 at the door. Organizers are requesting no videotaping or flash photography during the event.

For tickets to this evening’s black history event hosted by the GCSU Department of Continuing Education, call (478) 445-5277 or (478) 456-6566.

Tickets may also be picked up or purchased in person on the GCSU campus at 103 Chappell Hall on Clarke Street.
