A Baldwin County Superior Court jury found a man not guilty on three charges of terroristic threats and acts, stalking and harassing phone calls Tuesday afternoon in the first Baldwin County criminal court week in 2009.

Farando Speights, 27, was found not guilty by a jury on the three charges that were alleged by his then-girlfriend while he was incarcerated for an unrelated aggravated assault that occurred in 2005.

Speights was represented by Macon lawyer Jim Barnes and Assistant District Attorney DeLeigh Shelton presented the case to the jury for the prosecution.

Speights remains incarcerated for the unrelated charge.

“We had a jury picked by about 9:30 [a.m.],” said Shelton. “The trial lasted until about 3:00 or 3:30, and we had a verdict by about 4:30.

“It was something that supposedly happened while he was in the department of corrections,” said Shelton. “He was already in custody for unrelated charges.”

Despite a not guilty verdict, Assistant District Attorney DeLeigh Shelton said that cases like this are important to try.

“I think the trial went well. I think it was a case that needed to be tried. I think it’s important. Just because people are in prison doesn’t mean that crimes aren’t committed,” said Shelton.
