You can entitle this letter “Much Ado About Nothing.”
I’m referring to all of the recent hubbub regarding city/county consolidation. If ever there were a solution seeking a problem, this is one.
I don’t hear anyone in the general public, particularly the unincorporated part of the county (the majority of us?), clamoring for such a thing, but to listen to area politicians and the local press, the citizens are simply dying to have the county and city all lumped together, and it absolutely must be put up to a vote just as soon as possible. All consolidation would serve to do is raise taxes and bring more government (e. g. codes, ordinances, rules and regulations) to unincorporated Baldwin County, something we don’t need and don’t want.
We must ask ourselves: What is the true motivation behind this big push to consolidate? So far I haven’t heard a single proponent address the
question “why?”, at least from the standpoint of the citizens of unincorporated Baldwin County.
