Published November 28, 2007 11:20 pm - On Nov. 17, I had the pleasure of accompanying the Baldwin High Marching Band to Toronto, Canada, on its first trip to another country. BHS band shines in Canada The Union-Recorder On Nov. 17, I had the pleasure of accompanying the Baldwin High Marching Band to Toronto, Canada, on its first trip to another country.
On Nov. 18, the band marched in the Toronto “Santa Claus Parade.” The parade has been an institution for more than 100 years and is one of the biggest parades in North America. It draws about 300,000 spectators. The BHS band was the biggest band in the parade with almost 200 students. It also was the band that traveled the greatest distance to participate. The band did a fantastic job, and marched for six miles. When I saw the band coming up the street carrying the American flag, it was a proud and emotional moment for me. The band represented Milledgeville and Baldwin County proudly in this event. Band members also represented us well on the four-day trip by being on their best behavior. Students did what they were supposed to when they were supposed to, and I was very impressed. This community is lucky to have such a great band faculty who work hard to bring out the best in their students. I would like to give special thanks to Clint Raburn, band director, assistant directors Courtney Pilgrim and Christy Wood. Terry Brag, who does a great job with the Oak Hill Middle School Band, also helped on the trip. I also would like to give special recognition to Greg Burns a student teacher who has been working with the students. Greg helped on the trip working as hard as any of the regular faculty.
