Breaking News:  Sheriff investigating murder-suicide  January 06, 2009 11:43 am

Published November 25, 2008 10:44 pm - I have learned I need wake up calls in my life or I might miss something vital.

Recent GCSU Quran reading a wake up call

The Union-Recorder

I have learned I need wake up calls in my life or I might miss something vital. I believe this kind of message was delivered by The Union-Recorder in the Oct. 4-6 weekend edition article titled “Citing Scripture.” This is the reason I’m writing this letter to the editor. My alarm went off.

I question why you chose to focus on this small group of GCSU students “whose aim is to give insight into Muslim beliefs,” as the article clearly stated with a three-column color picture and almost full page article. Front page of Section B. Few local school groups, civic groups or churches get that kind of coverage.

Many parents of GCSU students do not want their children to be “encouraged to read aloud from the Quran on the steps of our old courthouse” in Milledgeville as your article again boldly stated.

“Bringing the teachings of Islam to an unsuspecting audience” anywhere in our country, in my view, should not be allowed and certainly not encouraged as “Citing Scripture” coverage may have reflected.

We are Americans and our faith is based on the inherent word of God in the Holy Bible. We have the right, privilege and honor of speaking out publicly against those that question our values and strong faith in God and our country. We cannot allow it to be threatened or compromised and our students be subjected to listen and read aloud from the Quran.

I’m proud of our students! I’m glad the 30 chairs set up for the Quran reading remained empty. Speaks volumes! Thanks, that fact alone renews my hope for America.

Did you get a wake up call? I hope so. Let’s fold up the thirty chairs, sweep off the old courthouse steps and sing, “God Bless America.”
