The holiday season was ushered in on the back of motorcycles Saturday afternoon at the Milledgeville Mall.
The Lady Diamonds Motorcycle Club held a holiday canned food and toy drive to help give back to the community at a time of the year when generosity is most needed and appreciated.
“With the economy as crazy as it is now, not everyone can afford to buy food and Christmas gifts,” Lady Diamonds President Sonja Palmer said. “So we’ve been putting our heads together with other local motorcycle clubs to help out.”
At this time of year the Lady Diamonds usually collect toys for the local Department of Family and Children Services, but Palmer said this year they decided to help the Salvation Army by collecting food and toys.
Lady Diamonds member Tyrontha Jackson told The Union-Recorder Saturday that it makes members feel good to know that they are actively involved in the community, especially when their efforts help children and the elderly.
“We try to do anything we can to have a positive impact on the community,” she said.
Leroy Butts, president of the Milledgeville Cruisers, came out to show support for another local motorcycle club that was out doing good for the community.
The Cruisers also try to dedicate their time to help any local organization that is helping people in the community, Butts said.
And between the two clubs there will plenty opportunities to lend a helping hand.
The Lady Diamonds will be holding their annual Diamond Fest in April, at which time they hope to host a bike show. And the Diamonds will have their annual back-to-school school supplies giveaway in August.
This year Palmer said she hopes to provide free school supplies to children in both the Milledgeville and Sparta communities.
The Milledgeville Cruisers will be hosting a bike show at the Milledgeville Mall in May. They will be soliciting donations from local businesses to give away as prizes in several different categories for motorcycle enthusiasts. All proceeds will be given back to community organizations.
The Lady Diamonds were formed about five years ago as an outlet for the six member’s love of riding and desire to give back to the community.
