MILLEDGEVILLE

Mayor Richard Bentley proclaimed it “Share the road with bicyclists day in Milledgeville” as the streets of downtown became a blur of wheels and spokes early Saturday morning. A total of 39 riders participated in the Bicycling Club of Milledgeville event in its April Fool’s Ride from Milledgeville to Sandersville. The event began behind Oconee Outfitters on Hancock Street and ended at a private residence in Sandersville.

Participants were given the opportunity to choose from a 1.5 mile trek around Milledgeville or to continue on for an additional 6.5, 19.5 or 33.5 miles. The purpose of the event was to raise money to purchase additional “Share the Road” signs to be placed on county roads. The cost to purchase and place a sign is $154.00.

“The main reason we did this was to raise money for the signs,” Benny Watson, BCM president, said. “We were successful in that. Every indication that I’ve gotten so far is that the event went great.”

Black Springs Baptist Church of Milledgeville and Darien Baptist Church of Linton provided land and resources necessary for the rest stops while food and transportation were provided by local businesses and BCM members.
