Career exploration

Explorer Academy opens eyes of aspiring officers

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Throughout the month of June, the Milledgeville Police Department Junior Police Explorer Academy provided an inside look at law enforcement for local participants. The program, open to ages 12 to 18, is designed for youth interested in one day pursuing careers in law enforcement. Participants learn various aspects of law enforcement such as traffic laws, criminal law and procedures, juvenile law and procedures and crime scene investigations.

The camp was held weekdays at the National Guard Armory. Twenty-seven local youth registered for this year’s program.

Participants got to see firsthand how traffic stops are executed. They also learned about first aid and rescue, high risk traffic stops and seatbelt safety. They also learned about fingerprinting and DNA testing during a presentation on crime scene investigation.

The camp was offered at no cost to the participants due to community support from local businesses and organizations such as the Milledgeville Exchange Club. Breakfast and lunch were made possibly daily through the Baldwin County Board of Education.
