GC Theatre Department presents political comedy ‘The Birds’

The Union-Recorder

MILLEDGEVILLE —

The Georgia College (GC) Theatre Department will present a multimedia stage version of the classical comedy ‘The Birds’ with live action cartooning, choreography and songs.

Billed as an ObamaRamaRomneyComedy, this flight of the imagination and tour de farce was adapted from Aristophanes' Greek comedy by Dr. Karen Berman and GC alumnus Steve Holbert. Featuring contemporary political satire, projections and giant puppets, the show will dazzle with acrobatics, masks, and costumes.

Show times are 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, through Saturday, Feb. 29 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 in Russell Auditorium.

With 30 speaking roles and fantastical bird costumes designed by Junior Matt Riley, this election year comedy is a delight for all ages, with equal opportunity jabs at all sides of the political spectrum. The plot involves disenfranchised youth from the Tea Party and Wall Street Occupiers movements who are determined to create a new utopia with the birds. The birds have a potion to make men fly. Romney, Obama, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton arrive on the scene.

An amazing ensemble of dancers are working with choreographer Julie Mulvihill. Joanie Smith from Washington, D.C. designed the puppets. Cartoonist Will Warren will draw cartoons live onstage.

Director and Chair of the Department of Theatre Karen Berman "is thrilled that we are presenting this state of the art multimedia comedy, the likes of which you have never seen before."

Tickets are $14 for general admission; $10 for senior citizens, Georgia College faculty and staff; and $5 for GC students. Groups of 10 or more can get a discounted rate. To purchase tickets in advance visit GCSUTickets.com or call (478) 445-4226.
