CSH redevelopment is vitally important for local community

MILLEDGEVILLE — Gov. Nathan Deal signed this week a measure to move the Central State Hospital re-development effort forward by finalizing the passage of House Bill 815, which authorizes the formation of a development authority to assist in the effort.

The Central State Hospital Local Redevelopment Authority will be charged with seeking state, federal and private funding for the renovation effort, which is hoped to transform the CSH campus into a rural health care center. The goal is to have the health care initiative be a portion of the historic CSH campus’s 1,900 acres and allow for further redevelopment all around in the remaining portions.

The redevelopment effort, which took form about a year ago, seems to be progressing, and now the redevelopment authority will soon take shape with the important task of procuring the funding to make this vision for rural health care and CSH a reality. Much like any other effort of the magnitude and ambition, it will not be possible without adequate funds through which to carry out the plan, which makes the appointment of members of this committee vitally important. The redevelopment project has received verbal support from stakeholders including the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

Rural health care and resolving the issue of creating greater access to rural residents is far-reaching in its scope and breadth for many people it seems, and the CSH redevelopment project could potentially meet several needs in the central Georgia region, adding to the importance of this project’s funding and who will be charged with that mission.
