MILLEDGEVILLE — nd

Traffic stop yields list of charges

From staff reports

A traffic stop conducted by a police officer resulted in a list of charges for the driver and his passenger.

According to an incident report from the Milledgeville Police Department, at 2:30 p.m. June 8 a police officer noticed a green Chevrolet pick-up truck traveling north bound on North Columbia Street without any headlights. He caught up with the vehicle and the truck pulled into the Walgreen’s parking lot. The driver was identified by his driver's license. While speaking with the driver, the officer noted that he could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. The officer asked the driver and the passenger if either of them had anything to drink. Both men said they hadn’t. The driver was asked to take a breath test to see if he was OK to drive. The Alco-sensor showed positive for alcohol and registered a 0.207.  The officer asked the driver once again if he was sure he has not had anything to drink. His response was that he had a few at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

The officer called for another officer to assist him in a field sobriety test. While waiting for another unit to arrive, the officer noticed that the passenger got out of the truck. The passenger was ordered to get back into the vehicle, but instead he began to side step toward the road. He then fled on foot and ran across North Columbia Street, through the Wendy's parking lot and up through the trail behind the restaurant.

Momentarily, the officer lost sight of him until he turned a corner and found the man getting up from the ground where he had fallen. He was stopped by the officer on Harris Street. After taking the man into custody, the officer was notified that the pick-up truck that he stopped earlier was seen driving on Robinson Mill Road.

Additional patrol units arrived and the man was placed under arrest.

He was taken back to the Walgreen's parking lot where officers searched the trail the suspect had run. While searching the trail officers found a plastic bag laying on the ground where the suspect had fallen. The bag appeared to contain crack cocaine.

The suspect was taken to the Milledgeville Police Department and turned over to jail personnel for processing. A field test kit yielded results that proved the substance found in the bag was cocaine.

Later, on the same date, the driver came to the police station, asking for his driver's license. He was placed under arrest and taken to the police department jail. He received warrants for headlight requirements, fleeing or attempting to elude the police, and driving under the influence of alcohol. The other suspect received warrants for obstruction of an officer and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
