We have so much going on for the rest of the year! Here’s a rundown of what’s going on with ARF.
Sunday, Sept. 9, is National Pet Memorial Day. ARF’s Peaceful Pet Crematory will have a Blessing of the Animals on that day at 3 p.m. at the crematory at 721 S. Wilkinson St. Dr. Jay Hodges will perform the Blessing. The purpose of the Blessing is to honor our pets, past and present. We love our pets, and this is a great way to honor our pets who have gone on and those that are still in our lives. Bring your pets at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, for this special day. Just remember that all pets must be in a pet carrier or on a leash.
Thursday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., is our Fur Ball Open House at the ARF Shelter at 711 S. Wilkinson St. This event is acknowledging several events in one. ARF is celebrating our 29th Anniversary (Sept. 20), we are acknowledging four of our dogs who have been sheltered at ARF for one year and we are introducing a new adoption program from the ASPCA called Meet Your Match.
This 29th Anniversary is a great event. It kicks off a year-long celebration of events culminating with our 30th anniversary next year. Keep visiting our website and our Facebook page to learn more about upcoming events.
We have had four dogs living at ARF for one year. We don’t know why these specific dogs have not been adopted, but we will keep them until they have been adopted. These are dogs who have a little problem such as shyness to essentially no problems except the way they look. They are too big, too small, too active, not active enough.... As I’ve said many times — there are no perfect people, so please don’t expect a perfect pet.
Meet Your Match is a successful adoption system formulated by the ASPCA. Every cat and dog is evaluated based on specific criteria set down by ASPCA, and then a color is placed on each chart. When you come to ARF to adopt a pet, there will be specific questions asked of you. Based on your answers, we will direct you to the animals who meet those criteria.
During the Open House, you will also have the opportunity to have guided tours of ARF and the Peaceful Pet Crematory. The tours will show you the different rooms within ARF and the reasons why we have these rooms such as our isolation rooms. You will get to see the back yard and the new dog exercise area.
October has two very big events for ARF. On Oct. 20, we will be at Deep Roots Festival selling our items and providing an opportunity for you to chat with our many volunteers who will be there. It’s always a fun event.
Oct. 27 will be our pet walk, Howl in the Park. This will be at the Oconee River Greenway and Riverwalk. It’s another fun event (hopefully a lot warmer and drier than last year!!). The children and dogs dress up, and we have costume contests.
When the full list of events over the next 12 months is complete, we will post the full calendar on our website. Join us in having a great 12 months of things to do with ARF!
