CURTAIN CALL: MMD tickets on sale, check out ‘Sweets’ and a history lesson tonight

MILLEDGEVILLE — Director Eddie Cheek certainly wants to make some groovy movies. In fact, he has arranged a gala Hollywood shindig to try to schmooze the rich and famous for some dough.

Thus is the premise for “Final Cut” a murder mystery dinner (MMD) being presented by the Milledgeville Players.

It’s all slated to take place this very weekend, Friday and Saturday evenings, Feb. 21-22.

Now if you have been keeping up with my fascinating columns for the past few weeks, you should know the basics. But here’s a quick review.

This MMD is tailored to be a red carpet type event. Eddie Cheek is trying to get money for his new movie spectacular, “The Zombie was an Alien.” With a title like that, you know you’re talking quality with a capital “K.”

He will have many of his stars, want-to-be stars, and crew on hand. All that’s needed is YOU.

You will be the audience, the participants, the highly sought after celebrities, people being auditioned for parts, and possibly even MURDER victims.

After all it is a MMD, which means there will definitely be a murder or two that you will be charged with solving. There are awards for Best Detective, Most Bumbling Detective, and Best Costumed.

In addition, “Millies” will be presented to those who are most generous in backing Eddie’s movie. Let’s face it; awards are often tied to financial incentives.

You will have a chance to have your picture taken while walking down the red carpet, or possibly posing with life size “movie buff” awards. And for a small donation to Eddie’s movie (around $5), you can get a copy of that particular photo, suitable for framing, displaying, hanging from your rear view mirror (it is time to replace those fuzzy dice, after all), or placing in your hope “to never open it again” chest.

And larger donations can mean more awards! See how it works?

Coming in costume is certainly not required of audience members but we have found over the years that it really helps them get into the spirit of the proceedings. And what could be better than strutting your stuff in a red carpet worthy outfit?

OK, since this is my last column before the MMD, let me address a couple of items that people have asked me about.

The MMD is at the new LaFete, located at 2675 N. Columbia St. If you are heading north on Columbia, it is just the other side of Cowboy’s. You essentially turn right at the sign for Edgewood Apartments. Then hang a left and you will be right there - it’s a large building that most recently housed a mattress outlet.

Another landmark you can use is that the right hand turn off Columbia is just before you pass a large billboard for a local palm reader

By the way, the dinner part of the MMD will consist of combinations of baked and fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and green beans with desserts of various cobblers and banana pudding. And there will be a cash bar.

Hey, even celebrities like comfort food.

Tickets are $25 and can be reserved by going to Now here is the second item people have asked me about.

When you order your tickets from the Players website, you will be directed to PayPal. As you do your payments, a screen will come up which features the “shipping address.” Basically that is your billing address - nothing is actually being shipped.

However, right below that is the line “Add special instructions to the seller.” Click that link and you will be directed to a text box that will allow you to make any special requests, such as wanting to sit with certain people - or possibly wanting to be placed as far as possible from certain people. Whatever.

Several people have had trouble finding that line about adding instructions. I’ll admit, it’s not the easiest to find but it’s how PayPal is set up.

Of course, you can also call 478-314-4054. Just leave a message with our local star maker and your call will be returned as soon as she’s finished her latest make over project.

Doors open for your red carpet walk at 6:30 p.m. The actual murderous proceedings will kick in around 7 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Now, I would also like to mention a couple of events that are taking place today. And though they are separate events, they are located in the same vicinity!

The Milledgeville Music Club is presenting its annual Sweets and Musical Treats program starting at 7 p.m. in the Goldstein Center at Georgia Military College.

There will be vocal and instrumental selections, as well as practically perfect piano performances. And all the young people participating are students from Baldwin County.

Music Club members will provide refreshments after the performance.

Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. All funds raised are used to assist with expenses in music programs in the schools of Baldwin County, from elementary to college. In other words, it’s for a pretty damn good cause.

Also today at the same time (7 p.m.), a special talk will be taking place in the legislative chamber of the Old Capital Building, also on the GMC campus.

This is part of the “Evenings with History” lecture series sponsored by Georgia’s Old Capital Museum Society.

The speaker will be Larry Smith, great-great-grandson of Judge Thomas Jefferson Smith. Now there is an interesting story here ... hey ... maybe that’s why they wanted him to be guest speaker!

Judge Smith made his home on Smithboro Plantation, just east of Monticello. In November, 1864, foragers from General Sherman’s army made their way to the plantation, looted it and tried to hang Judge Smith. His life was saved when a slave cut him down.

Larry Smith makes his home on a portion of the old plantation and will use family records and artifacts to describe the events that took place that faithful night.

So you’ve got two events to pick from this evening on the GMC campus. Guess it depends on whether your stepping out “mode” leans more toward music or history.

And get those reservations in for “Final Cut” this weekend at LaFete.

“Groovy Movies” is another song from the Kinks - first appearing in 1973 on “The Great Lost Kinks Album” which was an LP of unreleased material issued by Reprise Records after the Kinks had moved to RCA. The album had some great cuts on it, but was quickly withdrawn from distribution after the Kinks management instituted legal actions against Reprise, saying the group had never given permission for any of the tracks to be released.

“I don’t want to be a producer, I don’t want to be a big star, I just want to be a picture director, And smoke a big Havana cigar, By making groovy movies.”

Catch you on the flip side.
