GeorgiaBob’s brings southern goodness to Milledgeville

MILLEDGEVILLE — There’s nothing quite like spending the evening with a plate piled high with chilled coleslaw and succulent barbecue. If your palate has a taste for traditional Southern barbecue, then stop by GeorgiaBob’s Barbecue on Hancock Street. 

For more than 40 years, owner Ronnie Hornsby has been working under supervisors and bosses, but this new chapter in his life allows him to be his own boss.  

“I wanted to open up the business downtown so I could have something to pass down to my son,” Hornsby said, “He went to school here and worked as a chef in Milledgeville for a lot of years. I thought it would be nice to have a place we could run together as a family.” 

The restaurant has been open since 2011 and just celebrated its one-year anniversary with a birthday event Monday. Around 80 patrons showed up to help Hornsby and his staff celebrate the momentous milestone. The birthday bash gave everyone the chance to order items off the menu, sample desserts and enter a raffle for a chance to win a Georgia themed prize. 

Since last year’s grand opening, Hornsby says GeorgiaBob’s has entered flawlessly into the culture of Milledgeville.

“One of the things that we are kind of proud of is being able to fit into the personality of Milledgeville, and we really like the community,” Hornsby said. “I think we’re in a great location, and the best part is we’re the only barbecue restaurant downtown.” 

With the entire family pitching in, the business has got off to a phenomenal start. Each family member brings their own level of expertise to the business.

“I’ve been taking care of the business side of things,” said Hornsby. “My wife handles the books and accounts and my son pretty much runs the restaurant part. We seem to all come together as one.” 

The quality of the food at the restaurant is superb and most people are surprised that a downtown restaurant can create such rich southern home flavor. Its menu includes barbecue pulled pork, ribs, brisket, turkey, chicken, chicken salad and various sides and desserts.

“The biggest surprise to most folks is the chicken salad,” said Hornsby. “Most folks don’t expect it to taste so good.” 

Hornsby has noticed tremendous growth in business since it first opened its doors in 2011. He says that the real challenge will be increasing the number of customers into the restaurant and breaking his first year’s success. 

“I find it hard to believe there are still some people in Milledgeville who haven’t been by to try us out,” said Hornsby, “All they need is one taste and they’ll be hooked.”

“We would love to see everyone in the Milledgeville area come in at least once,” Hornsby said. “I think if you come and visit you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”
