Octagon Café re-opens at new Heritage Road location

MILLEDGEVILLE — Locally owned Octagon Café is relocating to a new location that includes a larger dining area and specialty menu items. The eating establishment served its last meal in its former location in the Milledgeville Mall on Easter Sunday. It will re-open today at its new location, 3010 Heritage Road. Restaurant hours are 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All week, as owners Brandy Ingram and Catherine Wooten worked to get the restaurant ready for re-opening, regular customers of Octagon have been stopping by to claim their spot.

“There’s not a day that went by that we didn’t see one of our customers come in and pick out a table as their regular spot,” said Wooten.

Ingram and Wooten have been serving hearty meals and bakery favorites for 10 years. May 5 will mark their 10th anniversary, but their working relationship began at Eckerd’s drug store in the mall.

“I was one of the managers at Eckerd’s, and Brandy was a photo lab manager. We got together one day to do a Valentine’s bake sale in the mall and the mall manager suggested we rent space and open up our own business,” Wooten said.

Ingram already had the dream of starting a restaurant, but the bake sale opportunity only moved her to take action.

In 2004 when Octagon opened it started out as a bakery. As time passed, Ingram and Wooten added deli-style sandwiches and salads to the menu. When more customers started coming in, the restaurant began serving homecooked meals along with baked goods and sandwiches.

The two women work well together, Wooten added. Ingram’s domain is in the kitchen preparing the meals while Wooten acts as manager, using her management techniques from her days at Eckerd to run the business.

As the business grew, so did the need for better equipment.

“When we were just baking, Ingram just used my kitchen and we had a small stove in the restaurant. When we started expanding our menu we were required to get more commercial equipment.”

Through word of mouth from loyal customers, Wooten was able to get bargain priced kitchen equipment from local restaurants that were closing.

“When Shoney’s and Hardee’s closed, we just put in a bid for their equipment and it turned out to be thousands of dollars cheaper than buying it from a wholesaler,” she said.

After 10 years Ingram and Wooten felt it was time to take the business to the next level.

“We didn’t have any problems with our location at the mall,” said Wooten. “We just didn’t have any room to expand.”

Once their lease was up at the mall, the ladies decided to look for an area that could accommodate their growing clientele.

The new location on Heritage Road is decked out in Hollywood-themed posters and memorabilia.

“We kept going back and forth and couldn’t really decide on the theme until we saw this poster with Marilyn Monroe and it hit us instantly.”

With more space to the business, patrons can now rent the restaurant for special events.

The restaurant will also feature specialty food days.  With a new smoker and grill added to the kitchen, Thursdays will feature ribs and homemade pizza. Fridays will be seafood night. They will continue offering holiday specialty lunches, similar to their Easter special. The next scheduled holiday special dinner menu will be Mother’s Day, May 11.

Those interested in renting space in Octagon Café for an upcoming graduation celebration should call 478-452-0588. They are also available for catering and call in food orders.

Hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday through Monday. The restaurant is closed on Saturdays.
