Childre dealership coming soon

MILLEDGEVILLE — By August, the new Milledgeville Childre Chevrolet Buick GMC Truck dealership's location will offer a state-of-the-art buying and service experience just in time for a 50th anniversary celebration.

After nearly four years of operating this Childre dealership in Milledgeville, Bob Childre and brother Jimmy Jr. are ready to expand their offerings at a larger location a few miles north.

“We'll be new and improved in every kind of way,” Childre said.

The Childre brothers have leased the space at their present location at 1980 N. Columbia St. since November 2010.

The local dealership currently operates on four acres of land. Sitting at 2710 N. Columbia St., the new property is 10 acres and will consist of a 25,000 square foot building.

The dealership store will have expanded services and allow for nearly 40 percent more vehicle stock compared to the over 40-year-old storefront operated currently.

Childre's father Jimmy Sr. opened General Motors in Sandersville in 1964 before coming to Milledgeville in 1980.

“Then we moved the General Motors store from Sandersville to Milledgeville in November 2010,” Childre said. “When we opened in Milledgeville, we knew we were going to build a facility on a piece of property of our own in the future.”

Rainy weather delayed the process almost five months, but JMWilliams Commercial Contractors out of Marietta and local subcontractors are full steam ahead at the moment.

Childre is excited about “Service Workbench,” which integrates staff iPads to look up car history, updates or necessary recalls on the vehicle.

The new dealership will have a separate place for quick oil changes, tire rotations and front-end alignments.

“We'll be able to check a front end in less than five minutes,” Childre said.

Childre team members are undergoing Disney Institute customer service to help foster the “best car overall guest experience.”

An engaged and active dealership team translates to each visitor. Service professionals are receiving revamped summer friendly uniforms.

A free water bottle for service customers is one touch.

Wi-Fi service and a dog park are new age features coming soon.

“(Guests) can sit outside in the dog park on a pretty day, or of course in the new waiting room with digital television,” Childre said.

Childre Chevrolet Buick GMC will likely transition the service shop down the road first and then move the rest of the operation.

“We will operate at two stores for a week or so,” Childre said.

To help ease traffic along the busy Highway 441 corridor, a turning lane will be placed for easy access to the business. That addition starts next week.

The Milledgeville 2010 move has been a great business decision.

Chevy Silverado's are still the top seller, though hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles are finding an audience.

Childre fully embraced the digital age. Customers can fill out a credit app to speed up the purchasing process.

“It's totally changed how we sell,” Childre said. “You have to be informed and online answering those leads. If you let them wait, you lose.”

With all the technology, Childre does still honor live person contact.
