Walk into a nail salon and you are more than likely to be overwhelmed with the smell of fumes. That is one problem two recent graduates of Georgia College and State University, Sam Kang and Jessica Fields, plan to eliminate from their newly opened nail salon. ExtraordiNailry Salon and Spa has high hopes to make their two-story salon stand out from the rest of the local competition.

To stop fumes from dispersing throughout the salon, Kang and Fields came up with the idea of placing open vents above each nail station so fumes can be sucked into the vents. Even though the inside of the salon has a modern appeal, Kang said they wanted to make sure some of the building’s brick was left untouched in order to bring out its’ authenticity.

Walk-ins are welcome and reservations can also be made for groups including wedding parties, sisterhood socials and even office lunch parties. Groups are catered to in the downstairs entertainment and spa lounge where they can enjoy total privacy. Kang said their store is all about the salon experience, and in order to make sure groups have a pleasant time, parties can bring their own music, movies or favorite episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

“We had a bridal party come and we served them wine and mimosas,” Kang said. “Customers really enjoy the experience. It’s different. We want to make customers feel comfortable.”

Kang said the reason they decided to choose the downtown Milledgeville location was because the lack of nail salons catering to college students and the employees of the downtown district.

“We know this area better than any other,” Kang said.

Kang and Fields want to provide customers with extraordinary services as well as an extraordinary atmosphere, so Kang came up with “ExtraordiNailry.” The design of the store logo and salon Web site was created by Fields.

Kang and Fields anticipated life after college to be headed in a very different direction; Kang had an apprenticeship job lined up as a project manager for a company called KBR, and Fields planned to join the Peace Corps. Their current primary focus is not only the salon; they have teamed up with the GCSU Health Center for the Healthy Hands Campaign to educate students of the risks of poor hand hygiene.

The salon offers student discounts and rainy day specials of 10 percent off on services including manicures, pedicures, acrylics of every kind and facial waxing. Since the Sept. 22 grand opening, Kang and Fields continue to plan on working hard so they can hopefully expand in the future.
