Tractor-trailer accident stops traffic on 22/24 Saturday

Daniel McDonald
The Union-Recorder

An accident involving two tractor-trailer trucks shutdown stretches of highways 22 and 24 this Saturday.

Baldwin County Fire Department Public Information Officer Brandon Barth told The Union-Recorder that fire rescue personnel responded to the call at the Stembridge Road-area of highways 22 and 24 at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday, and remained at the scene until a little after 1 p.m.

Barth said a log truck traveling westbound turned over on its side while negotiating a curve and collided with another tractor-trailer that was traveling eastbound on the highway.

Barth said both drivers exhibited lacerations as a result of the accident and were transported to an area hospital. Staff members at Oconee Regional Medical Center would not confirm whether or not the two drivers were transported there for medical assistance.

The accident ensnarled traffic on highways 22 and 24, just west of the area where the two highways diverge, for several hours Saturday as the payload of logs from the overturned truck littered the highway.

Barth said the driver of the second truck involved in the accident was especially lucky as one of the iron stanchions that hold the logs in place smashed through the driver's-side windshield and penetrated the cabin of the truck.

The Georgia State Patrol Motor Carrier Compliance Division is investigating the accident Barth said.
